China National Publishing Industry Trading Corporation (CNPITC) was established in October 1980, at the time as a corporation directly under the jurisdiction of the State Press and Publication Administration. In 2002, as a part of the national cultural system reform, it became a member of China Publishing Group. The scope of its operations includes books, newspapers, audiovisual products, electronic publications, as well as equipment and printing materials related with these activities. The company works in export and import of printing technology, joint ventures and cooperation, provision of publishing information as well as advertising. It works with domestic and imported versions of books, journals, newspapers, and electronic publications, both wholesale and retail, joint publishing, and trade in foreign copyrights for books, periodicals, and international and domestic trade shows and technical exchanges.

Since thirty years CNPITC has worked hard to establish relationships with foreign enterprises as well as expand into different areas of business, and has become a leader in the export and import of books and periodicals. It deals with a diversified product mix in the areas of book publishing, printing machinery and equipment, and the export and import of machinery and electronic products in the sector. The corporation is at the forefront of the export of printed materials, and is one of the biggest importers of high-technology printing equipment for the publishing industry in China, working with partners in North and South America, Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Arab community. In 2001, CNPITC's import-export dealings exceeded 120 million USD, resulting in its ranking among the top 500 importers and exporters in China, placing 468th, the first Chinese publishing company to ever enter into this list. The company attained the ISO9001: 2000 certification in 2002.

In 2009, in accordance with the Cultural Enterprise Integration Strategy, CNPITC underwent a strategic reorganisation with China National Publications Import and Export (Group) Corporation to become its wholly-owned subsidiary. The reorganised company consists of seven business units and two functional departments, with its main business being in international import-export trade as well as publishing services, chiefly dealing with the trade in printing machinery and electronic products, the import of related chemicals, papers, binding supplies and medical supplies, the import and export of books, audiovisual materials, electronic products and media-related devices and information, as well as the provision advertising and agency services.

CNPITC's subsidiary companies include: China Publishing Advertising Co. Ltd., “Xiandai Yuedu” (Modern Reader) Magazine and Modern Bookshop Co. Ltd., which are mainly engaged in advertising agency business, the publishing of journals and overseas sales of publications, and trading company activities.

CNPITC also holds stock in the Sino-Japanese venture--Shanghai Meiji Rubber Products Co. Ltd., BCTU Digital Technology Co. Ltd., the Beijing No. 797 Audio Co. Ltd., and a number of other enterprises.
